Luckily there's a million unique keyboard warriors like you, helping the world with one negative comment at a time!

Denis: Good job here on Stubborn.fun, illustration for startups is a tough problem (speaking from inside a startup) if you don't have budget for a set of custom illustrations. Other than that, once you choose a style, you're stuck to that illustrator for the rest of the time.

Is there any way to quickly change skin colors / other colors?

Thank goodness we have you to highlight negative comments. Much more useful.

Thank god we have people reminding us of the bubble we are operating in. This is not a negative comment, this is simple and plain a reminder. And the reason for why it stings or for why you are not laughing about it, is because you know it's true.

Why even complain about things that are released for free for people to use? Id love to see your contribution to the design community please.

Do you really think designers will use this generator? Or will it be the start-ups who don't hire designers/illustrators because of these generators?

Most definitely for start-ups. Most of the time you can't afford getting a proper illustrator to help you evolve your brand so using things like this and maybe modify it to your liking helps out a lot.

What's important are the features at that point and gaining new users. Not amazingly perfect illustrations. That comes with user numbers and money.

I think all designers want to have amazing illustrations. They don't want to default. But if they have to, it's great to have it available at least.

Same goes for typefaces like google fonts & photography like unsplash. Free is fucking great.

That's really not a fair statement though, because they are not complaining about a contribution to the community that will further its development, they point out that this contribution will do the opposite - it keeps us in our bubble. It's not fair to treat people like that.

To be fair, the kind of person who uses free-to-use graphics is not usually the same kind of person who is going to spend $100/hr on bespoke illustrations.

          Different horses for different courses.

Doing what everyone else does is up to the designers themselves in my opinion. If you want to stand out, do it, if you don't, then don't. Free things are just free things.

      Tired opinion.

The only goal for products is to make customers achieve their goals. Normal users are not overexposed to illustrations because, unlike you, their job is not browsing dribbble nor do they visit SaaS landing page for fun. Contemporary illustrations are not an issue for users - meaning they're literally not an issue.

If you think uniqueness is more important than effectiveness, and treat design as art, then you are far worse for this industry than an illustration pack.

Imo what's not being considered in the other comments is that this can be a great starting place for designers that don't have time to make from-scratch custom illustrations. I see the benefit in grabbing visual elements and making them your own.

Same rationale is applied to Bootstrap templates. It's fast to set up, and once you're set you can modify it to make it your own.

    Good idea, good product.

The truth about those free tools is that the people creating have never had any intention to contribute. All they want to do is create buzz about themselves - because you need to if you want to be part of that world. The producthunt link was already posted. Our bubble is full of talented, ambitious people and having a portfolio is not enough anymore, for many organisations.

Cool. Not my cup of tea but will definitely help designers with short timelines and small budgets to quickly inject a touch of creativity for their clients (even if it's manufactured creativity).

Could your headline be a bit snappier maybe? "Get the opportunity to design your characters using our generator absolutely for free", could become something like, "Free and fast character illustrations." Just my $0.02.

I think it's great. I can the use case for it when it comes to quickly come up with ideas and visual briefings for custom illustrations.

    Really don't understand the hate.

    Thanks, OP!

If having illustrations for your startup is critical to your marketing / branding, then you should be hiring custom illustrations from illustrators. Grab your own unique style instead of being a carbon copy of every other tech start-up. It is worth the money (if this is truly important to you).

I'm all for the concept of companies / people sharing ideas and giving back to the community, but I feel like our industry is making illustrations feel like second-class citizens. "Why bother hiring a talented illustrator when you can just throw together your own!"

Just my 2 cents. If this works well for you - more power to you.

Oh, cheese, so hot discussion! Thank you guys for your feedback and support. About me, I agree with Bradley Taunt. Every tool on the Internet is calibrated with a price and quality. Downloading free and looking good product, be ready for many similar solutions from competitors. If you pay a higher price, you can get some unique designs. It's simple. It's the market. So actually designers and startup owners should decide to use free sources or not, for each project separately.

PS. For Wes Oudshoorn. Of course, you can! Just change colors on the left side of artboards and they will be changed everywhere.

PS2. UPD Here was a PH link.

I really like that you've included a 'how to use' kind of section (combine & create).

As it's been pointed out here, these sorts of tools are for non-designers.. Startups, developers without much artistic knack, home sellers, etc. These are people that not only need the tools to create but also some direction on what/how to create their look and feel.

    Nice work.
