This is really interesting, and speaks to a feeling I have that the current state of design tools (Sketch, Figma, XD) are very far away from where they need to be.
That being said, building a new tool is very complex, and a major part of the issues current tools have is not just their philosophical approach to design but the technology they are built upon. If Figma wants to add margins or padding or hover states to their tool, they have to painstakingly write custom canvas code to recreate how HTML and CSS works. A tool like Framer X (which has its own issues) gets those features out of the box.
It will be interesting to see if the bigger change we need is the conceptual nature of design tokens and systems, or the technology those concepts are built upon.
In my mind these two parts (technology vs concepts) are like two sides of the same coin and they are intertwined. It's not either-or – you create new tech by looking at things differently and then you can be inspired by new tech and get even much more different outlook on things. So I think we need to rethink both. But specially in project Worlds I am trying to create new, more efficient and powerful way of looking at systems, no matter what technology you are using.
This is interesting, I do like the concept of removing the hierarchical structure of "atomic design" type systems, it is true it can be quite limiting.
