Slightly off topic but I liked this approach used by McDonalds in an email campaign. Two burgers created from table cells when images weren't shown...

  Haven't got an example to post, but Pizza Express do a really good job of the same thing.
  An email they used to send out had someone preparing a pizza in a kitchen and the cells behind it created a cartoon style version of him.
