Because it's an designers inside joke and the users will find it tacky.

  In this form, yes. But maybe there's another way of approaching it that's less tacky and still clever? Take a look at the Star Wars menu icon - http://i.imgur.com/4ao7Ig6.png - little lightsabers that still make a menu icon.
