In this form, yes. But maybe there's another way of approaching it that's less tacky and still clever? Take a look at the Star Wars menu icon - http://i.imgur.com/4ao7Ig6.png - little lightsabers that still make a menu icon.
and the users will find it tacky.

But what if this was fixed with a state change? So on page load it appears as a normal icon.
