I agree its pretty clever. But I still think that the display:table method is the way to go since that won't work on like most IE browsers

  The article states that this works down to IE9. According to http://caniuse.com/usage_table.php, global usage of IE8 and less is about 6%. Of course, depending on your users, this could be higher or lower.
