Personally, I like hamburger menus. I do not subscribe to the notion that users "dont understand them" etc, which is often claimed.
However in this instance, I agree with your sentiment - the menu being on the right hand side is a bit odd for starters, and it's really not weighted enough visually to even draw your eye to it. I took way too much time to notice it.
And then the rollover effect taking over the entire page is very off-putting for me - Sitting in a dark room and it nearly made me see stars with the sudden change in brightness.
