    I think the author is simply channeling a rejection into a design challenge. Nothing wrong with that.

      Agreed. Instead of "moving on" he believed in himself and knew his surroundings were hurting him in order to get to where he wanted to be. So, he took initiative and - arguably more important - the time to show that he had the raw talent and drive to fit in at Apple.

      In all seriousness, what did he have to lose by doing this? Or maybe the bigger question is..., what did he have to gain by quitting on his dream?

          Do you honestly think he will never be able to get a job at Apple because he did this? He made it clear that they asked to see "more", he saw that the school he was at was going to make that challenging, so took initiative.

          You know how he'd never get a job at Apple? By quitting.
