Frankly, I do quite like how Airmail 2 looks. I don't remember having any problems with how the first version looked either, but maybe I've just gotten used to it, or maybe that's just how I like my email client to look, yeah!
I've been using the Airmail 2.5 beta for some time and I am quite happy with it. It's kind of a "dumb" email client, in the sense that it doesn't do any fancy sorting or auto-scheduling for me. And I appreciate that.

Thanks for the heads-up. Poor alignments and spacing are absolutely intolerable. Now since you just pointed out these badly design elements in 5 min which means you're quite sensitive on the visual part, it makes me wonder how did you live with Airmail in the first place? Or is it again, a taste thing?
