I use Disk Inventory X (www.derlien.com/) to find such mysterious files. I cleaned some 7GB last week. It's an effective tool, I love it!

  Second that. This is the best tool I've found to locate pesky HD hogs. http://windirstat.info/ seems to be a similar, Windows-based utility.

  Be aware, that you need to run such utilities as root in order to see every single directory of your computer… Otherwise you will only be able to check directories for which you have the right privileges.
