I tell everyone it’s a great industry, but this sends it home!

    1. "If you're a software developer, you probably have a job. 97.5% of workforce respondents are employed in at least a part-time capacity."

    2. "76% of developers report being at least satisfied with their job, and 36% love their job."

    3. "60% of survey respondents have provided an answer on Stack Overflow. What motivates answerers? More than any other motivation, developers answer because it feels good to help a fellow developer."

    Awesome survey, great post Mattan!

Thanks Julian! It really is a great industry, but we still have a lot of stuff we can improve (that gender breakdown is depressing).

        Indeed.

I found it interesting that the average developer was born around 1986. I read an article emphasizing that personal computers were marketed almost exclusively as a gaming machine for boys, which was proposed as a large factor in the gender disparity.

That definitely played a big part in it, although I was confused when I first discovered the gender disparity (many years ago) since the first web developer I ever met (back in the 90s) was a woman, but since then the vast majority have been men.
