I agree. If it was like $2 for 50 icons a month, I'd sign up just to have it available and not even worry about the price. It starts to get dangerous when every single service is charging me $10 a month and suddenly I have $200 a month in subscription services.
The subscription existed before this desktop app. The value of subscription is supposed to be unlimited royalty free use.
I just use the NounProject for placeholders in wireframes, so there is no value to the subscription for me.
I would pay for searchable private collections of icons that I upload (and share with the team). I'd love to be able to upload our custom icon set(s) and access them through a slightly more advanced version of this app.
An alternate POV.
$10 per month is $120 per year.
If I charged by the hour $120 would be less than an hour of my time. So if that subscription saved me a single hour during the year it will have paid for itself.
I'm not a subscriber now, but if I saw an icon from there that would be useful I'd happily subscribe. I might not even cancel after the first month. Because if it saves me an hour of the period of a year it's making me money.
That's great, but when you work at a company with its own established iconset and your only use for Noun Project is for placeholders in your own side projects, then it is prohibitive. Then I am just throwing money into the ether.
Its no big deal, its a really convenient perk for subscribers, but I guess I just have to keep copying the EPS from source.

9.99/mo for something i'm not even guaranteed to use 100% of the time is complete overkill.
I'd be okay with it dropping small raster graphics in my document unless i was subscribed, but I'm not going to knowingly throw money into the ether.
