At what point does this level of industry-wide obsession with a single company become too much?

People are making whole careers out of second-guessing Apple and writing pages after pages of prognostication and pseudo-analysis, just to try and anticipate meaningless details that they'll mostly get wrong anyway.

In essence, Apple coverage has become our crowd's equivalent of supermarket tabloids… So I guess that makes John Gruber Perez Hilton?

John Gruber has always done this. And the readers who found it thoughtful years ago still do, like myself.

Yes the obsession aspect can be tiring. But product development can often be about obsession, thinking about the details and getting them right. Of course it’s all about balance, and also how useful it is to the reader.

Tabloids are just gossip that feeds more gossip. Hopefully talking about products can feed better products and better thinking.

On your last paragraph: very, very rarely have I seen hardware products, especially from Apple, follow the positive thinking that is generated because of them. It's beating a dead horse now, but all these great new things are about... 2 years old? 3? Apple isn't very good at listening to the customers--for the most part, they tell the customers what they want, and expect the customers to follow blindly.

With Apple's market cap of $607.27B (at the moment), every little things (changes / details) count.

"Industry Analysts" specialized in a specific company is nothing new. Gruber focuses on Apple but not coming from the pure financial and pure business points of view.
